House Comporta

CARVALHAL, COMPORTA, PORTUGAL

4 BR | 5 BA | SLEEPS 12

This villa sits at the foot of rice fields, minutes from the sea, in the natural reserve of the Estuario del Sado in Comporta. It's a location that its owners fell in love with for its unspoiled landscape, tranquility, gastronomic flavors, and welcoming spirit.

They created the cabana as a meeting place, made with respect for the original construction of old fishermen's huts, the traditional materials and colors of the region (white lime and exposed wood), and the exquisite location. The property has two cabins that are integrated into the landscape, the pine forest and other vegetation that surrounds them.

The owners' two guiding principles were simplicity and elegance, letting the landscape and light do the work. Much of the building is made of glass, large walls of glass in fact, that bring the dazzling outside world in, creating striking visuals. Interiors are filled with art in many forms, from restored antiquities and contemporary paintings to elegant carpentry. The soft, earthy tones and weathered wood bring the feel of the nearby beach into the villa.

The large, boomerang-shaped pool was color-matched to the blue-green ocean, its infinity edges pointing outwards across the landscape, bringing the view home.

The main cabin has space for 10 guests on two floors that total 310sqm. There are three en-suite bedrooms on the ground floor (two doubles and one with twins), and one additional bedroom on the upper floor under the beams (with four single beds), which has its own living room. Each bedroom has its own entrance and private terrace. The large kitchen opens into the main living room, which has an indoor fireplace.

The region of Comporta is located about one hour south of Lisbon in the Estuario del Sado Nature Reserve, where the Sado River meets the ocean. It's a popular destination for locals that has recently started attracting an international clientele because of its unspoiled charm and golden sandy beaches – so much so that it has recently been dubbed the Portuguese Hamptons.

The house is located just five minutes on foot from Carvalhal Beach and 10 minutes from Pego Beach. It's also close to the town of Comporta with its gorgeous 60km long beach. A former fishing village, it still retains its laid-back vibe and windswept natural beauty.
