Melides House

MELIDES, PORTUGAL

3 BR | 2 BA | SLEEPS 6

Restored in 2018 from a humble farm dwelling, the property is beautifully hand crafted in raw natural materials that preserve the simplicity and charm of the Atlantic coastal region of Alentejo, famous for its gastronomy, wine and tranquility.

Set within the picturesque Alentejo region, it is creatively integrated within the vibrant, natural landscape. A small compound of two dwellings, the structures have been thoughtfully restored to enhance their native authenticity.

It’s located in the small village of Courela da Rolla, where half of the population are still original native inhabitants.

Just an hour’s drive south of Lisbon, the Comporta area of the Alentejo is ideally positioned to enjoy both the countryside and the Atlantic coastal areas. The region stretches from the Sado river to the charming nearby town of Melides with the road to the rural Serra do Grandola valley. Along the immediate coast, a five-mile-long stretch of sand separates the sea and the lagoon, with the closest beach of Aberta Nova just a short drive away. Aberta Nove and Galé-Fontainhas Beach are both astonishing and far less crowded than Comporta, as up-and-coming destinations.

Praia do Pego and Praia Carvalhal can be reached within 30 minutes and are among Portugal’s most beautiful. The lovely former fishing village of Comporta on the Troia Peninsula is fast becoming a popular spot for the stylish crowd but thankfully retains its laid-back vibe and windswept natural beauty. Santiago do Cacem the ancient Moorish and later colonial community with quaint cobblestone streets and fortifications is thirty minutes south along with the stunning ancient Roman settlement of Miróbriga. Cais Palafítico da Carrasqueira is a very unique fishing village along the coast and Setubal and the Sado estuary region is an hour north.
